Read this for book club. Initially I was quite intrigued but once I realised it was sci fi fantasy I lost interest completely and mainly skim read the remainder. Obviously the start of a series. Ok maybe for those who enjoy this stuff.Tags : Amazon.com: Whisper (9781525300417): Lynette Noni: Books,Lynette Noni,Whisper,Kids Can Press,1525300415,Mysteries & Detective Stories,Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,Ability;Fiction.,Prisoners;Fiction.,Speech;Fiction.,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fiction-Fantasy,JUVENILE,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Grades 10-12 Ages 15+,TEEN'S FICTION FANTASY,TEEN'S FICTION MYSTERY & DETECTIVE,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Mysteries & Detective Stories,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,Young Adult FictionMysteries & Detective Stories
Whisper Lynette Noni Books Reviews
The book starts off by introducing us to “Jane Doe”, at least that’s what the staff at Lengard call her- but that is not her name. She refuses to tell them her name, she refuses to speak at all. When she speaks, terrible things happen that she can’t begin to understand let alone explain.
Jane has been imprisoned and kept as test subject at Lengard for nearly 3 years. She knows nothing of the experiments purposes, as nobody tells her why is there and why they are testing her. She was told that Lengard was a place for extraordinary people, and she believed them. She couldn’t have been more wrong.
The story builds when Jane is assigned to a new evaluator named Ward. If she doesn’t make progress with him in a month she will be removed from the program. Jane is very cautious of Ward, as he is the only person to show her any type of kindness or compassion in over two years. While she tries to keep her guard up against him, he slowly chips away at the walls she has put up in order to protect herself and those around her.
In a moment of panic Jane shatters her wall of silence and is then introduced to the real world of Lengard and the secrets that the government facility has been hiding from those it claims to protect. She has to decide which side to believe, and making the wrong decision or the wrong moves could have deadly consequences for her.
Being tormented by demons from her past, she doesn’t have faith that she can harness her powers and control them. Her faith in those claiming to help and protect her is tested as the ultimate battle beings.
The ending had me craving a sequel immediately. Action packed and thrilling, a picture was so well painted that I could swear I was watching a movie instead of reading.
Subject 684 aka Jane Doe has been in an underground facility for 2 1/2 years not speaking a word. She found out the power her words could wield and is afraid she might cause unintentional harm again.
Everything, including torture, has been tried on her to make her speak but it isn't until a young man and his sister enter her life and show her
kindness that she starts to find out the extent of her psychic abilities and that's she's not alone in being able to use differing powers.
This Young Adult book, first in a series, is set in Sydney, Australia and was a fun, action-packed read. The characters were varied and believable (I mean as much as they can be believable in their extraordinary circumstances). There are good guys, very bad guys, and some that it's hard to tell where on the spectrum they fall.
I couldn't find anywhere online noting when the next book in the series will be out but I'm already looking forward to it.
I received this book from Kids Can Press through Edelweiss in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
This story has a distinct feel of La Femme Nikita and took a little while to get going and hook me.
With Jane's tragic past and more than two years of torture and experimentation, you can't blame the girl for refusing to talk. During this time, her schedule is unvarying, she's held prisoner in isolation, and escorted in handcuffs by guards to evaluators who repeatedly poke, prod, and attempt to break her in one way or another. She's shown no kindness or affection, is self-reliant, and is angry, scared, confused, and accepting of her fate. But she finds the strength to survive and fight back in her own way.
Enter a new evaluator - a handsome, compassionate guy Jane's age who treats her like a person, and it's understandable that she responds to him. But also disappointing in a way. It takes nearly 100 pages to get to this point, but then there's a snowball effect and things come to her almost too easily.
I enjoyed the original premise, world-building, and twists, but wish less time was spent on getting Jane to talk and more on developing the secondary characters. They're charming and amusing, but I was left wanting to know more about them and how they fit into this story.
With several things left unresolved and a strong hint of a love triangle, I'm guessing this is the first in a series, and I'm intrigued enough to continue reading. I'd recommend this books to fans of sci-fi-fantasy blended with covert government operations.
Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the ARC.
I hope there is a second book. This one was awesome, I cant wait to read how Alyssa saves her friends and falls in love with Ward.
Lynette Noni is one of my favorite authors and I was so excited to see a new book from her! Whisper did not disappoint and I read it in almost one sitting.
I enjoyed the concept- I thought the story was very creative. I felt the characters weren't as fully developed as they could have been. That is the only negative. I didn't come to really love any of the characters, but the story is very good.
